THE FIRST RELIABLE RECORD OF THE FLIGHT BY A MECHANICALLY DRIVEN AIRCRAFT IS THAT BY A CLOCKWORK MODEL BUILT BY A FRENCH NAVAL OFFICER, FELIX DU TEMPLE, IN 1857. HE CHANGED THE MOTIVE POWER TO STEAM IN 1858 AND AGAIN THE MODEL REPUTEDLY FLEW SUCCESSFULLY.
THE FIRST RUBBER DRIVEN MODEL WAS BUILT AND FLOWN BY ALPHONSE PENAUD IN 1871. HE CALLED THIS AIRCRAFT THE 'PLANOPHORE'.
THE POPULAR SKETCH OF PENAUD' S MODEL IS CONSIDERED NOT TO BE THE SUCCESSFUL VERSION.
THE SUCCESSFUL VERSION HAD A STRAIGHT TRAILING EDGE TO THE MAINPLANE .AND A RHOMBOIDAL TAILPLANE WITH INCIDENCE ADJUSTMENT. THE MODEL HAD A SMALL TRIANGULAR FIN MOUNTED ON THE TAILPLANE.
THE PETROL ENGINE
CHRONOLOGICALLY IT IS NOW CORRECT TO MENTION THE INVENTION OF THE PETROL ENGINE.
THIS APPEARED IN THE FORM OF OTTO'S 4-STRORE ENGINE IN 1876. ITS FIRST RECORDED USE AIRBORNE WAS IN THE WOLFERT DIRIGIBLE IN 1888. BENZ HAD FIRST USED IT IN A CAR IN 1885.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS
THE HELICOPTER APPEARS REGULARLY IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF MODEL AVIATION AND IN 1878 THE ITALIAN, ENRICO FORLANINI BUILT A REASONABLY SUCCESSFUL STEAM-DRIVEN DEVICE. THIS WAS BASED ON THE LAUNOY AND BIENVENU HELICOPTER.
THE FIRST RECORD OF A COMPRESSED AIR DRIVEN MODEL IS IN 1879. THIS WAS BUILT BY TATIN AND WAS BUT PARTIALLY SUCCESSFUL, TETHERED FLIGHT ONLY BEING SUSTAINED.
DURING THE 1870'S MANY UNSUCCESSFUL ORNITHOPTER DESIGNS WERE PRODUCED AND BUILT.
EVENUTALLY IT WAS REALISED THAT THIS METHOD OF PROPULSION AND LIFT WAS NOT THE ANSWER. UP TO THE TURN OF THE CENTURY, THERE IS LITTLE FORTHER RECORD OF MODEL ACTIVITY, EXCEPT THAT OF S. P. LANGLEY IN THE USA WHO WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR BUILDING THE FIRST PETROL DRIVEN AIRCRAFT OF MODEL DIMENSIONS IN 1901. THIS HAD BEEN PRECEDED BY TWO SUCCESSFUL STEAM DRIVEN MODELS IN 1896.
THE PETROL DRIVEN MODEL WAS AN EXPERIMENTAL FULL SIZE VERSION OF PROJECTED 'AERODROME' UNSECCESSFULLY FLOWN IN 1903.
FROM ABOUT THIS TIME ONWARDS, THE PURSUIT OF THE MODEL AIRCRAFT WAS TAKEN UP MAINLY AS A HOBBY. AN ADEQUATE POWER UNIT WAS AVAILABLE, WITH A SUITABLE POWER-WEIGHT RATIO TO DRIVE A FULL SIZE AEROPLANE AND ON DECEMBER 17TH 1903, THE WRIGHT BROTHER'S AEROPLANE MADE THE FIRST POWERED, SUSTAINED, AND CONTROLLED FLIGHT IN HISTORY.
