THE MACHINE WHICH CAME THIRD TO THE 'CONQUEROR' WAS GORDON LIGHT'S 'MISS AMERICA'. THIS MODEL HAD THE SAME EFFECT ON AMERICAN ENDURANCE MODELS AS HAD THE CONQUEROR IN UK AND ITS EFFECT WAS TO BE SEEN IN THE 'KORDA' MODEL WHICH WON THE WAREFIELD CUP IN 1939. UP TO AND INCLUDING THE 1933 COMPETITION THE REQUIREMENT OF THE MODEL WAS TO TAKE OFF AND FLY A· STRAIGHT COURSE OF 200 YARDS TO PROVE IT'S STEERING CAPABILITY, THEN AN ENDURANCE FLIGHT, AGAIN TAKING OFF FROM THE GROUND. THE STEERING SECTION WAS DELETED AT THE 1934 COMPETITION. SPECIFICATIONS AND RE-
QUIREMENTS FOR THE COMPETITION HAVE CHANGED IN ORDER TO PRODUCE THE MOST EFFICIENT RUBBER DRIVEN MODEL. DURING THE NEXT FEW YEARS, THE MODEL AIRCRAFT DEVELOPED FAIRLY SLOWLY, BUT IN 1937 MANY STREAMLINED MODELS APPEARED. THEIR PERFORMANCE WAS GOOD, BUT THEY WERE VERY DIFFICULT TO REPAIR IF DAMAGED. IT WAS DISCOVERED HOWEVER THAT THE 'SQUARE' OR SLABSIDED FUSELAGE MODEL FLEW JUST AS WELL. WHEN THE AMERICAN, DICK KORDA WON THE WAKEFIELD CUP IN 1939. THE STREAMLINERS BEGAN TO WANE. WITH FURTHER TIGHTENING OF THE RUIES, PARTICULARLY THOSE WHICH LIMIT THE WEIGHT OF THE RUBBER MOTOR AND ELIMINATE THE REQUIREMENT FOR THE MODEL TO RISE OFF THE GROUND, THE DES IGN OF THE WAREFIELD MODEL HAS CHANGED CONSIDERABLY. THE MODERN MODEL IS AN EXTREMELY EFFICIENT AIRCRAFT.
GLIDERS
IT WOULD BE LOGICAL TO ASSUME THAT THE MODEL GLIDER WAS DEVELOPED PRIOR TO THE
MODEL AEROPLANE. THIS WAS NOT SO, THE GLIDER LAGGED BEHIND FOR MANY YEARS. THE EARLIEST GLIDERS WERE SIMPLY RUBBER-DRIVEN MODEL AEROPLANES WITH THEIR PROPELLOR AND MOTOR REMOVED, AND SUITABIE BALLAST ADDED IN THE NOSE. ONE OF THE FIRST EXPONENTS OF THE MODEL GLIDER WAS B K JOHNSON WHO DID BUILD HIS GLIDERS FROM BASIC DESIGNS.
IT WAS NOT UNTIL ABOUT 1938 THAT ANY REAL ADVANCE IN THIS TYPE OF MODEL TOOK PLACE, AND DESIGN FOLLOWED THE FULLSIZE GLIDER TO A GREAT EXTENT. A GOOD EXAMPLE OF A MODEL FROM THIS PERIOD IS THE 'IVORY GULL', BUILT BY R F L GOSLING AND THIS MODEL ESTABLISHED THE FIRST RECORD FOR SLOPE SOARING WHEN IT FLEW FOR SOME 5 MINUTES IN 1939. DEVELOPMENT OF THE GLIDER INCREASED RAPIDLY FROM 1950. ONWARDS MAINLY DUE TO THE GREATER ACTIVITY IN ORGANISED COMPETITION FLYING ABROAD.
