THE SMALL SCLAE MODEL AIRCRAFT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO MAKE FLY PROPERLY BECAUSE OF THE RELATIVELY SMALL SURFACE AREAS OF THE TAILPLANE AND FIN, WHEN COMPARED WITH THOSE OF FUNCTIONAL MODELS. PROBLEMS OF STABILITY ARISE, PARTICLARLY WITH LOW-WING DESIGNS. THE CHOICE OF PROTOTYPE IS VERY IMPORTANT IF GOOD RESULTS ARE TO BE ACHIEVED.
ONE OF THE EARLIEST NOTABLE FLYING SCALE MODELS WAS THAT OF A 'HORNET MOTH', BUILT BY H J TOWNER IN 1934. THIS MODEL WAS RUBBER-DRIVEN AND THE OWNER PROVED THAT A REASONABLY SMALL SCALE MODEL COULD BE MADE TO FLY SUCCESSFULLY IF A DEGREE OF CARE IN TRIMMING WAS EXERCISED. MR TOWNER KINDLY BUILT A REPLICA OF HIS 'HORNET MOTH' FOR MY COLLECTION OF VETERAN MODELS.
FOR SOME, THE TRUE SCALE MODEL PROVED TOO DIFFICULT, SO THEY RESORTED TO THE 'SEMI-SCALE' MODEL, A MODEL LOOKING RATHER LIRE ITS PROTOTYPE, BUT USUALLY WITH VASTLY INCREASED TAIL SURFACE AREAS. THIS 'PUSS MOTH' IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE SEMI-SCALE MODEL AND IT WAS BUILT BY T H NEWELL - HE WAS OF COURSE, THE FIRST WINNER OF THE WAKEFIEID CUP - THIS IS THE ONLY REMAINING EXAMPLE OF HIS WORK.
THE ADVENT OF THE SMALL INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE AND RADIO CONTROL HAS PROVIDED FACILITIES FOR SCALE MODELS WHICH ENABLE THEM TO BE OPERATED IN THE SAME MANNER AS THE FULLSIZE AIRCRAFT. IT IS NOW COMMON TO SEE SCALE MODELS WITH FULL CONTROL FACILITIES INCLUDING FLAPS, AS WELL AS RETRACTABLE UNDERCARRIAGES, WHEEL BRAKES AND STEERABLE NOSEWHEELS, DEPENDING ON THEIR PROTOTYPE.
THE REALISM OF THE RADIO-CONTROLLED SCALE MODEL CAN BE JUDGED FROM THE TELEVISION PROGRAMME 'WINGS', BROADCAST DURING THE WINTER OF (1976/77), WHEN ALMOST ALL THE FLYING SEQUENCES WERE PERFORMED BY MODELS OF ABOUT SIX FEET WING SPAN AND POWERED BY ENGINES OF SOME 10CC CAPACITY.
UNUSUAL MODELS
IN ANY HOJ3J3Y THERE ARE PEOPLE WHO, FROM TIME TO TIME VENTURE INTO REALMS OF THE UNORTHODOX. TAILESS MODELS, AUTOGYROS, HELICOPTERS ETC., HAVE ALL BEEN ATTEMPTED AND SUCCESSFULLY FLOWN.
COMMERCIAL MODELS
COMMERCIAL MODELS HAVE BEEN PRODUCED FOR MANY YEARS. THE SKYSAIL IS AN EXAMPLE FROM 1926, THIS RETAILED AT 12S 6D. WARNEFORD MODELS WERE VERY POPULAR IN THE 1930S AS WAS THE 5 SHILLING 'FROG' INTERCEPTOR FIGHTER.
CONCLUSION
