W. A. Smallcombe

Although Smallcombe is not one of the better known aeromodellers, he did contribute considerably to the hobby and became well known to Alwyn Greenhalgh.

"Good Old Days"

Before you go any further I highly recommend that you relax and read Willie Smallcombe's wonderful account of the early days of aeroplanes - model and full-size! CLICK HERE

1936 Petrol Driven Aircraft

Picture

Believed to have been used for photographic experiments.

'Hydro' model and 1937 Petrol

Picture
I have little information other than that they are Smallcombe models

RAF Exhibition - Reading

Picture
That may be Smallcombe on the left?

Water Bug

Picture
Smallcombe also designed this 'Water Bug'!

The Rook - 1914

Picture
'The Rook' was built in 1914 and this appears to be a photo taken at that time. Construction is of Hard Wood, Wire and Silk. The wing tips were derived after studying bird flight. The machine incorporates an ingenious - if elaborate - method for varying the elevator angle.

Smallcombe and Greenhalgh

Picture
This photograph was obviously taken after Alwyn Greenhalgh had restored 'The Rook'

'The Rook'

Picture
And here is 'The Rook' today!

Smallcombe and Chandler - 1937

Picture
The title says it all!

Picture

E Chandler. About 1939

Picture
E. Chandler is mentioned as a 'Stalwart of the Reading Club' and for his 'Exquisite workmanship'.
