Photographs related to the 1936 Wakefield Trophy Competition
Before The Event - Team Selection Page 1
40 years after the 1936 Wakefield Competition Alwyn Greenhalgh wrote a reflective article about the occasion. If you want to read it 'CLICK' here.
A 'posed' photograph taken at Fairey's Great West Aerodrome
Qualifying for the British Team. Competition was held at Fairey's Great West Aerodrome at Heathrow on 17th May 1936. That MAY be S. R. Crow posed on the Take Off Board. Bob Copland standing on the right and you may be able to see D. A. Pavely's Canard front end sticking out of Copland's head! Can you identify anybody else? If so - Please email me with details.
Martin Dilly writes "I am pretty sure the gent second from left in the black beret is Harry Hills of Croydon & DMAC. He used to give me lifts to contests in the 1950s in his BSA three-wheeler and I believe he flew SE-5As in the First War." Thank you Martin.

Denis Fairlie
Denis Fairlie placed third in the Wakefield Trials with this model. The car is Mario Lucani's 14hp. MG Tourer.
Filming of some contestants.
I include this photograph here because it was physically located amongst those annotated as being from the 1936 Wakefield trials - But Martin Dilly offers compelling reasons to suggest that it was not taken on that occasion. Also, in the 'Trevithick' section there is a photo that was obviously taken on the same occasion that states it was taken .. "in about 1938"! If I ever have definitive evidence as to where it truly belongs on the website I will move it.
Kneeling on the left is Richard Trevithick. Standing next is probably Sammy Crow. Standing at back is not known but may be Harry Jones or Hennery. Standing at front is A. A. (Bert) Judge - who went on to win the Wakefield Trophy in Detroit. Holding the twin engined aircraft is H. E. White. The gentleman with the glasses standing at the back is unknown (Possibly Harry York?). The next gentleman is J C Smith (S.M.A.E. P.R.O.) and the chap beyond the camera (holding a model) is almost certainly B. K. Johnson.
